Bata Kohe Research

Bricks made from cow dung waste. A collaboration research with Universitas Bina Nusantara.

This architectural research paper received IAI Banten Awards 2025 for 'Pemikiran dan Gagasan Arsitektur' or Architectural Ideas and Thoughts category.

The study was conducted alongside the design process of the Gampiri Interaksi Lestari communal space in Sigi. The exploration began with a search for alternative building materials that are more ecologically responsible and locally sourced, particularly by reducing reliance on extractive and non renewable materials such as sand and cement.

Kohe bricks were explored as a construction material alternative that requires fewer non renewable resources compared to conventional bricks. This effort reflects a broader position that architecture can serve as a tool for society to live more consciously with nature, not by imposing solutions, but by rethinking the materials we choose to build with.

Cow dung waste is abundantly available in the Sigi area. A series of prototypes were carried out to identify the most durable and structurally viable mixtures using cow dung combined with sand and cement. The research was a joint collaboration with Universitas Bina Nusantara.
